Hi my name is Patricia Thornton My piece Ski School is from a solo show I put together last year for the brink gallery called "The Rocky Mountains". In 2005 my husband and i moved from the SF bay area to Missoula, Mt. and lived there for 5 years.
I was working on a 2D totem pole for the show screen printing, stenciling, painting and drawing on 12" x 12" wood panels out of my tini, tiny studio i was renting at The Brunswick Building. I started with my usual cast of characters, Manny Rose and The High Functioning Zombies, who come from a series i started when i first moved to Missoula called "Misfits, Monsters and Pretty Things". I was abstracting these characters and thinking about masks, animal guides and symmetry.  While working on this piece i was downhill skiing every Friday afternoon in Snow Bowl's "For Women Only" Ski School. It was my 2nd year skiing and we spent a lot of time learning how to ski mogals so that we could eventually ski a bowl. It was both scary and exciting. I was also skiing w Mary an adorable 6 yr old, i take care of, who was in ski school as well. They say if you learn to ski at Snow Bowl you can ski anywhere. This is my piece dedicated to that. In Nov of last year we moved to Bozeman, Mt. where i continue to ski.
